BlackHat

BlackHat

A black hat is the villain or bad guy, especially in a western movie in which such a character would wear a black hat in contrast to the hero’s white hat.

The phrase is often used figuratively, especially in SEO slang, where it refers to a technique that breaks search engine rules. Google says that white hat SEO would be someone that would write copy, give advice on site architecture and help in finding relevant directories to which a site can be submitted. Anything else would be blackhat.

Here’s my two cents on white hat and black hat.

It sounds like to me it is white hats that steal your money. Either they charge you money and do little to nothing at all or they lie and are really black hats.

I build my sites for the site visitors and market them for the traffic. It’s Google’s job to make their search engines work, not mine.

If I find a way to make my sites rank and keep it relevant to the visitor, I’ll do it. Some people might call my methods black hat but I’ve seen more sites get banned that claim they’ve done nothing wrong than sites doing what I do. As a matter of fact I have yet to see one site get banned using the techniques I use.

But the real kicker is this. I won’t do SEO for anyone else. Let’s say that you have a website selling silicone wristbands. You are willing to pay me $4,000.00 per month to optimize your website and get it to rank. I need to make your website do $8,000.00 per month to make it worth your time and money.

I need to spend time talking with you on the phone explaining what I am going to do and how I am going to do it. I need to stay in touch with you a couple times a week showing what I am doing and explaining why I am doing it. I’d much rather set up my own site and you pay me per sell.

Now I don’t have to tell you shit and if what I was going to do for you works, I should be able to make $5,000.00 or $6,000.00 per month. If it won’t work then all I’d been doing was stealing your money.

According to Google anything other than writing content for your site is just wrong.

    Hi Kevsta,

Do you have the correct link and I’ll change the link?

The problem is that you have these guys running around the forum pointing at everything and calling it black hat.

The term blackhat is mostly used when someone wants to look better about what they do in public. SEO in itself is a shady business IMO. We’re all in it :D

I agree it is a shady business.

Although, the problem is not in the shading but with the people that do not know enough about it to know that it is shady.
